Hw to Play Pai Gow Poker

Pai Gow originated in Asia where dice and dominoes were used. It was a slow-playing, complex game more suitable for social gatherings than aggressive gambling in a casino. Today, Pai Gow has simpler rules and uses ordinary playing cards. Because it depends on poker hand rankings to decide the winner, it is often called Pai Gow Poker.

Pai Gow Poker Setup

The Pai Gow table can accommodate up to six players plus a seventh, the dealer. Players can take turns acting as the dealer just like in traditional poker. But unlike poker in which one is only a nominal dealer, the player must have the funds to broker the other players' bets.

Pai Gow uses a standard fifty-two card deck plus a joker. The joker is normally regarded as an ace. But if it can make any straight- or flush- type of hand, it becomes a wild card.

Pai Gow Poker Rules

After bets are made, each player receives two hands - a five-card hand called the "back hand" and a two-card hand known as the "front hand." The best back hand is a royal flush; the best front hand is a double ace.

The goal in Pai Gow is to defeat the dealer's two hands with your two hands. If both your front and back hands win, you are paid one for one or even money. That is, a $20 bet wins $20 plus your original wager.

If both your hands lose, the dealer collects your bet.

If only one of your hands wins and the other losses, it is a push or tie.

If you and the dealer have the same kinds of hands, the dealer wins.

A special note on hands: Your front hand must always be inferior to your back hand in ranking. If your front hand is superior, you automatically lose.

All players' wins have a 5% rake; that is, the casino takes 5% of every player win.

Dealer and Banker in Pai Gow

It is advantageous for a player to be a dealer whenever possible. However you need to have the money for it. and this is why being dealer also means being a banker. If so, you can bet small when a player and bet max when it is your turn to be a banker. You cannot be a banker/dealer twice in a row.

If you want, the casino hosting the Pai Gow game can let you share the banking and dealing with another player. You two will then share the profits in case of a win.

If a player is the sole banker, the house dealer can function as an ordinary player. But on every hand, they will first compare their hands to the banker and pay if the banker wins. Then they will compare the banker's hands to that of the other players and pay out with the banker's money.

Pai Gow Poker is recommended by expert gamblers as one of the better choices out there. It plays slowly and has a low house edge so your gambling bankroll can last longer.
